What Is a Facial Hair Transplant?

A facial hair transplant is a treatment that gently harvests healthy follicles, sets them out by texture and viability, and transports them to the face for natural growth. Facial hair transplantation is another advanced surgical hair restoration procedure designed to transplant scalp hair to facial regions of eyebrows, mustache, beard, or goatee which are lacking density and fullness.

Most of our patients requiring facial hair transplants would opt for the most updated FUE hair restoration procedure to harvest follicles. Long Island Hair Transplant Center employs a revolutionary technique called follicular unit extraction (FUE).

By harvesting small bundles of hair follicles where they mainly grow abundantly (at the back of the head), Dr. Barnard and Dr. Golio then transplants these units of follicles to the area where you most want to experience new hair growth. This process is also known as hair grafting. It can provide a stunning new look for individuals who want to maintain natural hair growth on various parts of their faces.

Hair Transplants for Mustaches

A mustache hair transplant pertains to the procedure of extracting live hair grafts (hair follicles from the donor sites of the patient’s head) and transplanting them in the defect area (scar or very thin region) or for the creation of a new mustache in congenitally absent persons.  Mustache hair transplant through the FUE technique can enhance the growth of mustache hair.

In this procedure, Dr. Barnard and Dr. Golio extract the grafts from the donor area with the FUE technique and implant it in a mustache’s defect area. Sometimes more grafts are required to produce total recreation of the mustache. Approximately 500 to 600 grafts are necessary to create a thick beard. An experienced hair restoration team should perform facial hair transplant procedures for the best results.

Beard Hair Transplants

A beard transplant is a procedure wherein hair is taken from one part of the body and transplanted to your jawline and wherever you want your beard to grow. The procedure may sound simple enough, but it involves a thorough process.

In this type of procedure, Dr. Barnard and Dr. Golio use follicular unit extraction (FUE) by cutting a small strip of tissue from the back of the head and removing hair follicles from that tissue. Then, the doctors transplant this tissue to the cheeks, chin, and jawline to create a full beard.

Hair Transplants for Eyebrows

Normally, the remedy for thin or scattered eyebrows has been to rely on makeup products to fill in eyebrow hairs. However, interest in a more permanent solution has continued to increase: the eyebrow transplant.

A cosmetic or plastic surgeon can perform an eyebrow transplant by transferring your hair to your brow area. The goal is that new hairs will grow from these grafts, producing a fuller look.

While the procedure seems straightforward, individuals have multiple aspects to consider, from cost to risks and side effects. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) gets used for this type of procedure, wherein years of plucking and waxing may have depleted your eyebrows. However, adding healthy follicles to enhance your eyebrows can give them a sleek line and a natural look.

Benefits of Facial Hair Transplants

When your hairline recedes, you could opt for a topical solution, wear a hat, or choose to shave your head to deal with the problem. However, when your facial hair grows unevenly or not at all, you have fewer options from which to choose.

Shaving may cause skin irritation, and letting diffused patches of facial hair grow may not reflect your ideal style. That is why follicular unit extraction (FUE) helps to restore facial hair such as a mustache, beard, and eyebrows that enable your hair to grow consistently. FUE for facial hair has the following benefits:

  • State-of-the-art equipment
  • Highly selective harvesting process
  • Precise placement of healthy follicles
  • Promotes growth of your natural hair

Eligible Candidates for Facial Hair Transplants

If you desire more consistent hair growth on your eyebrows, beard, and mustache, you may be a good candidate for an FUE hair transplant. However, to become an eligible candidate, you must exhibit enough donor hair at the back of your head (just above the neck) to provide a much-needed supply for facial hair restoration.

Personal Consultation in Long Island

As much as we would like to talk to you over the phone or through email to discuss your hair loss concerns, we prefer in-person consultation to understand your medical history and hair growth needs thoroughly.

During your initial consultation with Dr. Barnard, Dr. Golio, and Clinician Daniels, you can point out your problem areas and discuss how you would like to make the changes. You can show us some photos to demonstrate your aesthetic desires of how your beard, eyebrows, and mustache would look good on you. You can also show us some pictures of your younger years to give our clinical staff a baseline from which to work. If we fully understand where you’re coming from, we can fully strategize the best way to perform your facial hair transplant.

Preparation

Preparing well is the key to a successful facial hair transplant. Upon preparation, you’ll receive a guide explaining in detail how to prepare for facial hair implants to make sure you’re well prepared. This process is tailored to your unique anatomy, and following the instructions can ensure the success of your facial hair transplant.

Dr. Barnard and Dr. Golio will illustrate how to treat the hair in your donor site and properly moisturize your face for a few days before having your facial hair implant. If you have any questions regarding how to prepare for surgery, call us at Long Island Hair Transplant Center.

Procedure

Follicular unit extraction is a good choice for conducting your facial hair transplant. Initially, Dr. Barnard, Dr. Golio, and Clinician Daniels will shave the area on your head from which they’ll harvest the follicles. This shaving can give them a better view of the hair follicles. Before the harvesting begins, you’ll receive a local anesthetic so that you won’t feel any pain during harvesting or implantation.

Once the follicles are harvested from your head, our doctor will inject a local anesthetic into the area of your face where the implants will be placed. Then the doctor will implant each follicle into your facial skin, shaping your new facial hair the way you both agreed on before surgery.

Ultimately, Dr. Barnard, Dr. Golio, and Clinician Daniels, our highly skilled hair transplant specialists, can determine what type of hair you have and develop a comprehensive plan for each graft. They employ the new and advanced FUE hair restoration system that targets healthy hair and cradles the follicles at the roots as it collects them efficiently and with the utmost care and safety.

Recovery and Results

Within a few hours following the facial hair transplant, you may feel slight discomfort from the area of the hair extraction. Dr. Barnard, Dr. Golio, and Clinician Daniels would recommend applying a cold pack or soothing lotion in the donor area. The healing process should be complete over the next two days. FUE facial hair implant produces tiny pinpricks from the area where follicles get extracted; these marks often heal within 48 hours.

If you notice that transplanted hair falls out after two weeks, you don’t have to worry because this process is normal. After three months, transplanted follicular units would develop new hair growth. Although the cells may need some time to adapt to their new surroundings, they will exhibit a remarkable ability to promote healthy hair, just as they did when they survived on the back of your head.
